Shipments of fresh pork reach 549 thousand tons in the year

Brazilian chicken meat exports reached 4,100 million tons in 2018, informs the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA).

Thanks to the monthly average shipments of 377.3 thousand tons in the second half – the best performance in the last three years – the sector reduced accumulated losses in the first six months of 2018 (-13.4% compared to the first half of 2017) and ended the year with a 5.1% lower result in relation to the 4.320 million tons exported in 2017.

Part of this performance stems from the positive balance obtained by the sector in December. Confirming forecasts made by ABPA, exports in the last month of 2018 reached 352.8 thousand tons, a volume 9.9% higher than the 321.1 thousand tons shipped in the same period of 2017.

Total exports in 2018 generated revenue of $ 6.571 billion, down 9.2% from the $ 7.235 recorded in the previous year. The good performance of sales in December guaranteed an increase of 11.3% for the period, with a balance of US $ 581.4 million – against US $ 522.5 million in December 2017.

Asia was the main destination for exports, with 1.379 million tons in 2018. Next came the Middle East, with 1.348 million tons. Africa, with 596.1 thousand tons, the European Union, with 263.4 thousand tons, the countries of the Americas, with 319.5 thousand tons, of Extra-EU Europe, with 103.2 thousand tons, and Oceania, with 2.2 thousand tons complete the list of destinations.

“There is an expectation that the good flow obtained in the second half of last year will continue in 2019. This is due, among other reasons, to the actions that the productive sector, led by ABPA, will adopt through the 500K Project, which aims to achieve the monthly average of 500 thousand tons in total exports of chicken and pork meat until the end of 2020 ”, highlights Francisco Turra, president of ABPA.

Fresh pork – Just like the poultry sector, pork exporters registered notable increases in the second half, as well as in the last month of the year.

In December, there was an increase of 8.8% in shipments of fresh pork, with a total of 47.7 thousand tons in the last month of 2018 – in December 2017, sales reached 43.9 thousand tons.

With this, the sector ended the year with total exports of 549 thousand tons, a volume 7.4% lower in relation to the 592 thousand tons registered in 2017. The accumulated losses of 19.5% in the first half of the year (in comparison with the first half of 2017) were reduced by an increase of 4.5% in the last six months of the year.

In revenue, sales of fresh pork reached US $ 94.8 million, 7% less than in the same period in 2017, with US $ 101.9 million. In the total for the year, sales generated revenues of US $ 1.115 billion, 23.9% less than in the previous year, with US $ 1.465 billion.

“The pace of sales to China were decisive for the performance of the sector’s exports in 2018. The expectation is that the flow to the Asian market will continue, boosting sales in the sector at a time when Russia gradually resumes imports of the product Brazilian ”, analyzes Ricardo Santin, executive director of ABPA.
